How Behavioral Questions Work

Behavioral interview questions are based on the premise that past behavior predicts future behavior. Rather than asking what you would do in a hypothetical situation, the interviewer asks what you did in a real one. This gives them a much richer signal about how you actually operate. The most common format is the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Leadership and Influence

These questions assess whether you can drive outcomes through people you may not have direct authority over, and whether you take ownership rather than waiting to be directed.

  1. Tell me about a time you led a team through a difficult project. What was the biggest challenge you faced and how did you handle it?
  2. Describe a situation where you had to influence someone who did not report to you. How did you approach it?
  3. Tell me about a time you stepped up to lead when it was not your designated role.
  4. Give me an example of a time you had to make a decision with incomplete information.
  5. Tell me about a time you had to build consensus among people with different priorities.
  6. Describe a situation where you coached or developed someone on your team.
  7. Tell me about a time your leadership approach did not work as expected. What did you learn?

Conflict and Difficult Relationships

Interviewers asking these questions want to know whether you avoid conflict, handle it constructively, or escalate unnecessarily.

  1. Tell me about a time you had a significant disagreement with a colleague. How did you resolve it?
  2. Describe a time you had to give critical feedback to someone who was resistant to it.
  3. Tell me about a time you disagreed with your manager's decision. What did you do?
  4. Give me an example of a time you had to work with someone you found genuinely difficult.
  5. Tell me about a time a cross-functional team you were part of had a serious conflict.
  6. Describe a situation where you were treated unfairly at work. How did you respond?
  7. Tell me about a time you had to deliver bad news to a stakeholder or client.

Failure and Setbacks

These questions test self-awareness, honesty, and your ability to learn from experience. Interviewers are watching for whether you own failures genuinely or deflect blame.

  1. Tell me about your biggest professional mistake. What happened and what did you learn?
  2. Describe a project that failed. What was your role in that outcome?
  3. Tell me about a time you missed an important deadline. What caused it and what did you do?
  4. Give me an example of a time you received feedback that was hard to hear. How did you respond?
  5. Tell me about a time a plan you advocated for did not work out as expected.
  6. Describe a time you made a decision that turned out to be wrong. How did you handle the aftermath?
  7. Tell me about a time you were not able to meet a commitment you made.

Teamwork and Collaboration

  1. Tell me about a time you made a significant contribution to a team project. What did you specifically do?
  2. Describe a time when your team disagreed about the right approach. How did you contribute to the resolution?

  4. Give me an example of a time you had to adapt your working style to fit the needs of the team.
  5. Tell me about a time you helped a colleague who was struggling.
  6. Describe a time you had to collaborate with someone who had a very different working style than yours.
  7. Tell me about a team you were part of that was particularly effective. What made it work?

Initiative and Problem Solving

  1. Tell me about a time you identified a problem before anyone else noticed it.
  2. Describe a time you improved a process that was not working well.
  3. Tell me about a project you initiated on your own that had a meaningful impact.

  5. Tell me about a time you had to figure out something entirely new without much guidance.
