What the HR Round Is Actually Testing
Many campus candidates treat the HR round as a checkpoint before the technical interview. That's a mistake. The HR round is specifically designed to assess things that technical rounds can't: how you communicate, whether you understand yourself, and whether you're likely to be a good long-term hire.
Common HR Round Questions With Answer Frameworks
Tell me about yourself. Start with your educational background in one sentence. Move to what you've worked on. End with what you're looking for and why you're excited about this role. Keep it to 90 seconds.
What are your strengths? Pick two or three that are genuinely relevant to the role. Give a specific example for at least one. Saying "I'm a hard worker" without an example means nothing.
What's your weakness? Pick a real weakness that isn't central to the role, explain what you've done to address it, and show progress. "I used to struggle with presenting to large groups. I joined a debate club in my second year and it's significantly improved my confidence."
Where do you see yourself in five years? Show that you're thinking about growth and contribution. "I'd like to develop strong technical skills in the first two years and then move into a role where I'm helping mentor junior team members."
How do you handle pressure and deadlines? Use a specific example from college. Describe the situation, what was at stake, what you did, and what the outcome was.
The Salary Expectations Question
For freshers, this is sometimes set by the company's standard package. If they ask for your expectation, research the market rate for your role and location before the interview. Give a range with your preferred number at the lower end.
How to Close the Interview Well
Thank the interviewer genuinely. Reiterate in one sentence why you're excited about the role. Ask about next steps in the process. Always say yes when asked if you have questions. Try: "What does the onboarding process look like for someone starting in this role?" or "What qualities tend to make people successful here in the first year?"
